RS Reporters Blog

Student Government Blog Post #1

We have now officially begun our International Studies Student Government meetings every Monday from 3.30-5.00pm for the year of 2013-14. In these meetings, we discuss the changes that need to be made to the school, but from the students’ perspective. The Student Government consists of about 30 students from FND5 to IB2 (ages 15-18). We have split ourselves up into 3 committees: Student Body (Communications), Events and Fundraising. Each committee is equally important in helping create a better student life, and also having fun!

To commence this year of 2013-14, we held elections where we voted for five students to take the major roles in the Student Government. The positions are as follows:

President: Grace L (IB1)

Vice President: Celine P (IB2)

Treasurer: Johanna VB (IB2)

Secretary: Rowena W (IB1)

Chair: Ben L (IB2)

The student government has already been working on ideas, such as the Suggestion Tin where any student (or teacher) can write down their suggestions on a piece of paper and submit it, and the Student Government will take the idea into account. You do not have to put your name on the piece of paper, it can remain anonymous. The Suggestion Tin is located just outside Mrs. Woindrich’s office, next to the Sign Out sheet.

The Student Government will continue to work hard to try and make this school year the best year for everyone!

RS Reflects on Kenya Attacks

Dear Colleagues,

The Kenya attacks last week had a direct impact on our community. The International School of Kenya, one of our new partner school, lost a student and a parent. Three other of their students are in the hospital due to the attack.

Please find below a response from Gordonstoun school that I believe reflects appropriately what Round Square can bring to the world. Feel free to talk about these events with students as they should be aware that events that occur thousands of miles away can also impact their lives directly.

Best,
Ben Hunter

"Photographed last week at Gordonstoun. Rather appropriate given the events in Kenya.  Round Square can be a vehicle, especially the students, to promote conflict resolution, to engage the young wherever they may be  through social media and face to face dialogue and steer those who may be vulnerable to distorted interpretations of whatever  religion or creed away from misguided hatred.  I am sure there will be much opportunity for debate and making  waves of change at St Andrews."
